Abstract
Similia similibus curentur commonly translated as “let likes be treated by likes,” represents the foundational therapeutic principle of homoeopathy. Although the concept of treating disease with substances resembling the disease manifestations has antecedents in earlier medical traditions, particularly discussions associated with Hippocratic medicine and later Paracelsian thought, Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843) transformed the idea into the central therapeutic principle of a distinct medical system. Historical scholarship indicates that Hahnemann's understanding of similars developed progressively, particularly between 1796 and the publication of the Organon in 1810. His approach connected the symptoms of a natural disease with the symptom-producing capacity of medicines established through experimentation on healthy individuals. In the Organon, this concept became closely associated with individualisation, drug proving, the totality of symptoms, and the selection of a remedy capable of producing a similar artificial medicinal disease. This article traces the historical evolution of the principle, examines its theoretical significance within Hahnemannian homoeopathy, and discusses its applicability in classical homoeopathic case management. It also considers the distinction between the historical/theoretical importance of the principle and the question of its effectiveness according to contemporary scientific standards.
