Abstract
Kannada film songs occupy a distinctive place in the cultural and communicative life of Karnataka. Although created within the commercial structure of cinema, many songs have travelled beyond the screen to become remembered expressions of love, loss, hope, struggle, relationships, spirituality, social values and reflections on the meaning of life. This paper examines how selected Kannada film songs can function as informal life lessons by communicating philosophical ideas and human values through accessible language, emotion, metaphor and melody. The study adopts a qualitative, interpretive approach based on thematic content analysis of selected representative Kannada film songs across different periods of Kannada cinema. The analysis focuses on recurring themes such as the uncertainty of life, desire and restraint, love and companionship, memory and longing, resilience, dignity, cultural belonging, emotional communication and the search for meaning. Songs such as 'Baanigondu Elle Ellide' from Premada Kanike (1976), 'Naguva Nayana' from Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983), 'Naadamaya Ee Lokavella' from Jeevana Chaitra (1992), 'Yaava Mohana Murali' from America America (1997), 'Anisuthide Yaako Indu' from Mungaru Male (2006), and 'Badukina Bannave' from Tagaru (2018) illustrate different ways in which film music connects personal emotion with broader reflections on life. The paper argues that the communicative power of Kannada film music lies not simply in melody or entertainment but in its capacity to turn complex emotional and philosophical ideas into memorable cultural expressions. At the same time, the study recognises that the meaning of a song is not fixed; it is shaped by the listener's age, experience, social context and relationship with the film. Kannada film songs therefore deserve attention as an important form of popular communication, cultural memory and informal value education.
