Understanding the Maintaining Cause Through Nux vomica: An Organon-Based Review

Abstract
The maintaining causes in any illness is an essential aspect of the classical homoeopathic approach to case management. Samuel Hahnemann stressed the need to consider conditions that could lead to, worsen, or maintain diseases, and to remove them if possible. The current article examines the issue of maintaining causes presented in the Organon of Medicine and links this idea to the traditional Materia Medica image of Nux vomica. Some important principles related to the role of the physician, investigating the circumstances of the disease, and taking into account its exciting and maintaining causes are briefly reviewed. Lifestyle factors such as excessive nutrition, the use of stimulants, a sedentary way of life, overstrain of the mind, irregularity of the patient's regimen, and a stressful profession are some examples of the circumstances that may be taken into consideration while examining a patient. The traditional Materia Medica image of Nux vomica possesses some features characteristic of the above-mentioned circumstances, which makes it a good example for illustrating the connection between circumstances of the case and individualisation. Nevertheless, the mere presence of the maintaining cause does not make it sufficient for the choice of the homoeopathic remedy. This paper is a narrative review, and as such, does not include any original clinical research. The Organon and Materia Medica ideas presented above are the basis of classic homoeopathic philosophy and should be separated from modern evidence concerning their efficacy.
