Abstract

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as versatile nanocarriers

Lipid nanoparticles are tiny particles made of fats, and the amazing thing is—they can carry many types of materials inside them. Think of them like small delivery trucks that can safely carry delicate drugs or genetic material to the right part of the body.

Key role in drug and gene delivery

They help in delivering medicines that normally cannot reach their target. Some drugs get destroyed in the stomach, some cannot dissolve in water, some get rejected by the body. LNPs protect these drugs and help them reach exactly where they are needed.

In gene delivery, they carry DNA or RNA into cells, which is not possible directly.

Recent prominence due to mRNA vaccines

LNPs became extremely popular during COVID-19 because they were used in mRNA vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna. Without LNPs, mRNA would break down instantly. So LNPs act like a shield and help mRNA enter our cells to produce immunity.

Notes: Highlight importance in modern therapeutics

You can mention that without LNPs many modern medicines, especially genetic medicines, simply wouldn’t work.
