Abstract
A model's predictive performance is not enough to make sure whether machine learning models are appropriate for diagnosis. This work provides a simple leakage-free pipeline for binary classification and subsequent explanation for the Wisconsin Diagnostic Breast Cancer (WDBC) dataset. It is tested on the WDBC dataset. In this paper, we compare four classifiers, which include logistic regression, support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors, and random forest. To ensure that the experiment is conducted honestly, stratification is used when splitting the data, and all of the preprocessing techniques are applied only to the training set to avoid any leakage of information from the test set. The models are chosen based on the results of the five-fold cross-validation and tested once on the independent test data. The SVM achieved the highest accuracy (97.37%) and F1-score (96.30%), while logistic regression achieved the highest ROC-AUC (99.60%). SHAP and permutation importance revealed that the models are mostly dependent on shape and texture features of tumors, including the worst texture, concavity, and radius.
