Abstract
Higher temperatures and unpredictable rainfall are bringing drought and heat stress to farms that grow crops and keep livestock together. These conditions break down the waxy outer layer and hormone-based defenses of crop plants, weaken the immune systems of farm animals, and speed up the production of Aspergillus and Fusarium mycotoxins in the feed and food chain. When contaminated staples reach people's plates, the resulting mycotoxicosis causes long-term public health problems. Aflatoxin B1 is switched on by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver, drives liver cancer, and lower-level exposure has been linked to environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), inflammation of the gut lining, and poor absorption of nutrients. These in turn help to cause stunting and micronutrient deficiency in young children. Dietetic and public health programs often fail because they treat these outcomes as shortages of calories or nutrients, when the real problem is metabolic damage caused by toxins. Precision agricultural engineering offers a way to stop exposure before it starts, using soil and silo moisture sensors, low-cost weather stations, and mobile digital climate advisories that guide planting dates, harvest timing, solar drying, and the distribution of feed during hot weather. Whether advisories turn into real nutritional protection depends on who can actually use them: gender differences in smartphone and extension access, questions over who owns communal farm data, and whether adaptation subsidies reach the farmers who need them. This framework links plant and animal stress biochemistry, sensor engineering, and precision dietetics with food safety standards and public health policy, in order to protect maternal and child nutrition and smallholder livelihoods as climate pressure grows.
