Abstract

Microbial enzymes have emerged as pivotal drivers of sustainable industrial biotechnology, offering highly efficient and selective alternatives to conventional chemical catalysts. This review critically examines recent advances in the commercial production of microbial enzymes, with emphasis on integrated upstream and downstream processing, fermentation technologies, and enzyme engineering strategies. Key industrial enzymes—including amylases, proteases, cellulases, lipases, and chitinases—are evaluated in the context of their functional roles and sector-specific applications.

Recent developments in synthetic biology, CRISPR-based genome editing, and artificial intelligence-assisted protein design have significantly enhanced enzyme yield, stability, and catalytic performance, enabling their deployment under increasingly stringent industrial conditions. Despite these advances, challenges related to production cost, process scalability, and enzyme robustness remain significant barriers to widespread commercialization.

Special attention is given to chitinase as a multifunctional enzyme with emerging relevance in sustainable agriculture, waste valorization, and biocontrol systems. Furthermore, the integration of enzyme technologies within the framework of circular bioeconomy is discussed, highlighting their potential to transform industrial processes toward low-carbon and resource-efficient systems. This review provides a comprehensive and forward-looking perspective on microbial enzyme technology, identifying key research gaps and opportunities for future innovation.
