Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of emotional awareness on coping strategies among certificate students at the University of Iringa and Ruaha Catholic University in Iringa Municipality, Tanzania. Specifically, the study assessed the level of emotional awareness among certificate students and examined how emotional awareness influences their coping strategies. The study employed a quantitative research approach guided by a cross-sectional research design. Data were collected from 221 certificate students from the University of Iringa and Ruaha Catholic University using structured questionnaires. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS Version 31 through descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages. The findings showed that certificate students demonstrated different levels of emotional awareness and used various coping strategies to manage academic, social and personal difficulties. The findings further showed that emotional awareness was related to how students managed difficult situations and responded to different sources of stress. Some students also reported difficulties in seeking support from friends and classmates during difficult situations. The study concludes that emotional awareness is an important factor in students’ coping strategies. The study recommends strengthening emotional awareness education, counselling services and student support programmes within higher learning institutions to improve students’ coping strategies and emotional well-being.
