Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common inflammatory disorder of the nasal mucosa produced by an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated response to inhaled allergens. It is characterized mainly by sneezing, nasal itching, watery rhinorrhoea and nasal obstruction, with or without ocular symptoms. Although conventional treatment includes allergen avoidance, antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids and allergen immunotherapy, complementary approaches are sometimes considered by patients. Bryonia alba is a well-established remedy in traditional homoeopathic materia medica, particularly when respiratory complaints are associated with dryness, painful irritation and marked aggravation from movement. Its characteristic indications may overlap with selected presentations of rhinitis, but this should not be interpreted as proof of efficacy. Available clinical evidence for homoeopathy in allergic rhinitis remains limited and of uncertain quality. This article reviews allergic rhinitis and discusses the possible utility of Bryonia alba from a homoeopathic materia-medica perspective while emphasizing evidence-based diagnosis and conventional treatment when required.
