Abstract

The study assessed the effect of milestone tracking on project delivery in Iringa Municipal Council, Tanzania. Specifically, the study examined how milestone tracking practices influence project delivery. A quantitative research approach was employed using a cross-sectional research design. A sample of 86 respondents was selected using simple random sampling, while five key informants comprising procurement and project management personnel were selected purposively. Data were collected using questionnaires and interview guides. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 26, while qualitative data were analysed thematically to support the quantitative findings. The findings showed that milestone tracking supported project delivery through timely establishment and review of project milestones, prompt identification of missed milestones and the use of milestone information in project decision-making. These practices helped project personnel monitor implementation progress, identify delays and take corrective action to support timely project completion. However, delays in reviewing milestones and unforeseen implementation changes occasionally affected progress towards planned project targets. The study concludes that effective milestone tracking contributes positively to project delivery in Iringa Municipal Council by strengthening progress monitoring, early identification of implementation delays and timely corrective action. The study recommends that Iringa Municipal Council strengthen the establishment, regular review and monitoring of project milestones and ensure that deviations from planned targets are identified and addressed promptly to improve project delivery.
