The New Graduate in Private Dental Practice: A Narrative Review of Clinical, Business, Legal and Professional Foundations for Long-Term Success

Abstract
Background: Newly qualified dentists increasingly enter private practice with sound clinical training but limited preparation for the business, legal and professional demands of independent work. Objective: To synthesise, in one practical framework, the clinical, managerial, regulatory, branding and professional-development domains that determine safe entry into private practice and long-term success, with emphasis on the South African context and comparison with other major jurisdictions. Methods: A structured narrative review was conducted. Publicly accessible literature indexes, regulator websites and guideline repositories were searched in October 2026, prioritising systematic reviews, meta-analyses, consensus statements, clinical guidelines and primary regulatory documents. Findings were synthesised thematically and supplemented by the author's experience in private practice. Results: Seven domains emerged: transition and wellbeing; clinical competence from foundational to advanced care; infection prevention and occupational health; business management; legal and ethical regulation; brand and patient experience; and lifelong development. The evidence supports prevention-first care, diagnosis using contemporary classifications, and working within demonstrated competence with timely referral. Burnout and musculoskeletal disorders are common, modifiable risks. Core regulatory duties (valid consent, transparent fees, records, confidentiality, restrained advertising) are broadly shared worldwide but differ in detail. Reputation rests chiefly on consistent clinical and communication standards. Conclusion: Success in private practice is multifactorial and can be planned. A staged roadmap integrating competence, systems, compliance and wellbeing is proposed. Limitations include the narrative design and jurisdictional variation; legal content is informational and must be verified locally.
