Abstract

Phytochemicals are biologically active compounds produced by plants that can exert diverse effects on the human nervous system. Their influence on neuropsychological health may be beneficial, neutral, or adverse depending on their chemical nature, dose, exposure and biological targets. This review examines the relationship between plant-derived phytochemicals and neuropsychological health, with particular emphasis on neuroactive and neurotoxic mechanisms. Major phytochemical classes and their potential interactions with neurotransmitter systems, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, receptors and cellular signalling pathways are discussed. Selected neuroactive plants, including Bacopa monnieri, Centella asiatica, Withania somnifera and Curcuma longa, are reviewed with respect to their major phytochemicals and reported effects on cognition, memory, stress and neuroprotection. In contrast, neurotoxic plants such as Datura stramonium, Aconitum ferox, Strychnos nux-vomica and Lathyrus sativus are examined for their toxic constituents and associated neurological and neuropsychological manifestations. The review highlights the dual nature of plant phytochemicals and emphasizes the importance of understanding their mechanisms, therapeutic potential and toxicity for informed use and future research.
