Abstract
This paper explores the representation of suffering, memory, loss, and healing in Anita Nair’s novel Lessons in Forgetting. The novel presents the emotional struggles of individuals who experience pain, loneliness, broken relationships, and personal loss. Through the journeys of its characters, Nair shows that healing is not about completely forgetting the past, but about accepting painful experiences and finding the strength to move forward. The paper examines how human relationships, self-understanding, emotional support, and hope contribute to the process of healing. It also focuses on how the characters gradually transform their suffering into opportunities for personal growth and renewal. The study argues that literature can provide a meaningful space to understand emotional pain and represent different paths towards healing. Lessons in Forgetting ultimately presents hope as a powerful force that helps individuals rebuild their lives after suffering.
