Abstract

The accelerating expansion of digital infrastructure, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and increasingly data-intensive services, has intensified the environmental pressures associated with data centre development. Rising electricity demand, substantial cooling-water requirements, and greenhouse gas emissions increasingly require sustainability approaches that consider interconnected resource impacts rather than isolated efficiency measures. This study develops an integrated environmental sustainability framework for managing the energy, water, and emissions impacts of expanding data centres. The framework evaluates energy efficiency, renewable electricity integration, water usage effectiveness, advanced cooling technologies, carbon intensity, resource availability, and operational performance across data centre systems. It further examines renewable procurement, energy storage, workload optimization, water recycling, liquid cooling, waste-heat recovery, and carbon-aware computing as complementary intervention strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying trade-offs between energy consumption, water conservation, emissions reduction, reliability, and computational growth. By integrating measurable environmental indicators with operational and infrastructure strategies, the proposed framework supports systematic sustainability assessment, informed resource-management decisions, and environmentally responsible expansion of data centre infrastructure.
