Abstract
Vitiligo is a chronic acquired disorder of pigmentation characterized by the development of well-defined depigmented patches on the skin due to the loss or dysfunction of melanocytes. It can affect individuals of any age and may involve the face, hands, feet, trunk, and other body areas. Although vitiligo is not contagious or usually physically harmful, its visible nature can have a considerable psychological and social impact. Conventional management includes topical corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, phototherapy, and other treatments selected according to disease extent, activity, and location. Homeopathy is used by some patients as a complementary approach and is based on individualized remedy selection according to the patient's symptoms and constitutional characteristics. This article reviews the clinical features of vitiligo, the principles of homeopathic management, commonly prescribed homeopathic remedies, available clinical evidence, and important safety considerations. A small randomized placebo-controlled pilot study has reported preliminary findings supporting further investigation of individualized homeopathy in vitiligo; however, the available evidence remains limited and is insufficient to establish homeopathy as an effective treatment. Further well-designed clinical trials are required to determine its potential role in the management of vitiligo.
