Abstract
The present study investigated the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution using a guar gum-g-poly(acrylic acid)/zeolite superabsorbent composite. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the effects of adsorbent dose, contact time and pH. The residual dye concentration was determined by UV-Visible spectrophotometry. Increasing the adsorbent dose from 0.01 to 0.1 g increased dye removal from 25% to 93%. Increasing contact time from 20 to 200 min increased removal from 20% to 90%. The effect of pH showed maximum methylene blue removal of 92% at pH 10. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were applied to the equilibrium data. The Langmuir plot showed R² = 0.9826, while the Freundlich plot showed R² = 0.9520. From the slope of the Langmuir plot, the calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 5.19 mg/g. The results demonstrate the applicability of the prepared superabsorbent composite for methylene blue removal from aqueous solution.
