Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between environmental sustainability practices and the operational performance of medium-sized beach resorts on Samal Island. Employing a quantitative, descriptive-correlational design, data were collected through survey questionnaires administered to operations managers from 57 qualified beach resorts, selected via total population sampling. The findings revealed that both environmental sustainability practices and operational performance were at a high level. Among the sustainability indicators, employee training and awareness creation received the highest rating, while water consumption, though still high, was the lowest-rated practice. Overall operational performance was also high, with the speed of service delivery receiving the highest rating and cost the lowest. A statistically significant positive relationship was found between environmental sustainability practices and operational performance (r = 0.640, p < 0.05). Regression analysis further identified water consumption and waste generation, reduction, and recycling as significant predictors, explaining 44% of the variance in operational performance. These findings suggest that as resorts increase their adoption of specific sustainability measures, particularly in water and waste management, their operational performance tends to improve. The study's results support the Stakeholder and Triple Bottom Line theories, highlighting how integrating environmental responsibility can contribute to business effectiveness. The research provides valuable insights for resort owners, local government units, and aspiring entrepreneurs, offering a data-driven basis for promoting sustainable and efficient tourism operations on Samal Island.
