Abstract
This review examines how service-desk automation can strengthen managed IT security operations by reducing preventable human error while improving consistency, traceability, and operational resilience. It evaluates PowerShell-driven provisioning and workflow automation, system-health monitoring, detection and automated remediation, and the measurement of human-error reduction through operational performance indicators. The study adopts a critical integrative review approach, synthesizing literature on IT service management, automation engineering, cybersecurity operations, human factors, governance, access control, and intelligent remediation to establish a unified analytical framework.
The findings show that PowerShell is most valuable when positioned as a governed orchestration layer rather than as an isolated scripting utility. Standardized provisioning, reusable workflows, configuration interrogation, structured logging, validation, and controlled remediation can reduce repetitive manual variation and improve service reliability. However, automation does not eliminate operational risk; flawed logic, excessive privileges, incomplete telemetry, weak validation, and poorly bounded execution can propagate errors rapidly across managed environments. The review further establishes that claims of reduced human error require empirical validation through baseline comparisons, normalized rates, longitudinal analysis, and auditable metrics such as provisioning accuracy, failed changes, configuration deviations, mean resolution time, mean time to detection, mean time to remediation, repeat incidents, rollback frequency, and administrator intervention.
The review concludes that secure automation depends on least privilege, code review, credential protection, approval gates, exception handling, rollback, logging, and human oversight for high-impact decisions. It recommends stronger policy-as-code practices, explainable AIOps, adversarial testing, benchmark datasets, and longitudinal evaluation frameworks to ensure that increasing automation enhances security, accountability, and resilience rather than merely accelerating execution across complex, distributed, and increasingly autonomous managed service environments worldwide.
