Abstract

Gastric and duodenal ulceration together form peptic ulcer disease (PUD), a condition that continues to affect large numbers of people worldwide despite receiving comparatively little public attention. This article draws together published evidence on how common the disease is, how it develops, how it is diagnosed, and how it is treated, with particular focus on two dominant causes: infection with Helicobacter pylori and regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It also looks at treatment approaches recommended in current clinical guidelines — chiefly proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antibiotic eradication regimens — along with newer strategies aimed at limiting serious complications like bleeding and perforation. Taken together, the evidence points to one clear message: catching the disease early and addressing its risk factors proactively is what ultimately keeps complication rates and healthcare costs down.
