Abstract
Rice is an important food crop and export commodity in India, contributing significantly to agricultural production and international trade. This study examines the growth and instability of rice area, production and productivity in India and analyses the export performance of basmati and non-basmati rice. The study is based on secondary data obtained from FAOSTAT, APEDA and other published sources. Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), Coppock’s Instability Index and Cuddy-Della Valle Instability Index are employed to assess growth and instability. The findings indicate positive growth in rice production and productivity, particularly during the recent period, despite limited growth in cultivated area. Both basmati and non-basmati rice exports recorded positive growth in quantity and value, with non-basmati rice showing higher growth. However, instability remains significant, particularly in non-basmati exports. The study concludes that productivity enhancement, production stability and appropriate export policies are essential for sustaining India’s competitiveness in the global rice market.
