Abstract
Data security has become a critical concern in the modern digital environment because organizations and individuals generate, store, and exchange enormous quantities of sensitive information. Traditional centralized data-management systems are vulnerable to unauthorized access, data manipulation, single points of failure, insider attacks, and cyber threats. Blockchain technology has emerged as a potential approach for addressing several of these challenges through decentralization, cryptographic protection, consensus mechanisms, immutability, and transparent record keeping. Originally introduced as the underlying technology of Bitcoin, blockchain has developed into a broader computing technology with applications in healthcare, finance, supply-chain management, education, government, and cloud computing.
This research paper examines blockchain-based approaches to improving data security. It discusses the fundamental architecture of blockchain, cryptographic mechanisms, distributed ledgers, consensus protocols, smart contracts, and access-control mechanisms. The paper further examines how these characteristics can improve data integrity, confidentiality, authentication, availability, and accountability. Various applications of blockchain for secure data management are analyzed, including healthcare records, financial transactions, Internet of Things (IoT) environments, cloud storage, and supply-chain systems. The study also considers important limitations, such as scalability, privacy concerns, energy consumption, regulatory uncertainty, key-management problems, and vulnerabilities in smart contracts. The research concludes that blockchain should not be considered a universal replacement for conventional security technologies. Instead, it can serve as a complementary security layer when its properties are appropriately matched to the requirements of a particular application.
