Abstract
The increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels has stimulated interest in lignocellulosic biomass as a renewable feedstock for bioethanol production. This study assessed the potential of mango (Magnifera indica) peels as a lignocellulosic substrate for bioethanol production, with emphasis on physicochemical composition, reducing sugar recovery, inhibitor reduction and ethanol yield. Mango peels were washed, sundried, milled and subjected to combined pretreatment using acetic acid and hydrochloric acid, followed by acid hydrolysis. The physicochemical composition of the raw and pretreated biomass, reducing sugars in the hydrolysate, fermentation inhibitors, and bioethanol yield were determined using standard analytical procedures. The raw mango peel contained 49.14% carbohydrate, 38.94% cellulose, 27.31% hemicelluloses and 12.465 lignin. Following acid pretreatment, cellulose increased to 50.76%, while hemicelluloses and lignin decreased to 9.51% and 7.13% respectively, indicating structural disruption of the biomass. The hydrolysate obtained after hydrolysis contained19.63g/l reducing sugars, corresponding to a total reducing sugar recovery of 36.10%. Detoxification reduced the measured inhibitor index by 40.23% and 61.78% for the 1:3 and 3:1 overliming/activated charcoal ratios, respectively, with the 3:1 ratio showing greater detoxification efficiency. Fermentation produced an ethanol concentration and yield to 5.13g and 28.91% at the 1:3 ratio, and 6.42g and 35.67% at the 3:1 ratio, respectively. The findings demonstrate that mango peels possesses considerable potential as a renewable lignocellulosic feedstock for bioethanol production, while effective detoxification, particularly using the 3:1 overliming/activated ratio, can substantially improve fermentation performance and ethanol yield.
