Abstract
Palitya is a condition described in Ayurveda, characterized mainly by premature greying of the hair. Normally, greying of hair is a natural process associated with advancing age; however, greying at a younger age is considered abnormal. Akala Palitya not only affects the external appearance of an individual but may also have an impact on mental well-being, self-confidence, and self-esteem. From an Ayurvedic perspective, Palitya is primarily associated with the vitiation of Pitta Dosha. It is also described in relation to Rasa Dhatu Dushti, which may contribute to changes in the normal colour of the hair.
Various dietary, behavioural, and psychological factors may contribute to the vitiation of Doshas and changes in the normal colour of hair. In Ayurveda, Nidana Parivarjana refers to avoiding or eliminating the factors responsible for the causation of a disease and is considered an important principle of disease management. Therefore, identifying and avoiding factors such as improper dietary habits, an unhealthy lifestyle, excessive consumption or exposure to hot substances, and psychological stress may help in preventing or slowing the further progression of premature greying of hair. The present article discusses the concept of Nidana Parivarjana in Palitya and explores its practical role in the prevention and management of premature greying of hair from an Ayurvedic perspective.
