Abstract

Egg quality is significant for the production of high quality fish larvae and for economical utilization of hatcheries. The study evaluated the egg quality of African mud catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822) Brood stock fed treated Azanza garckeana pulp meal diets. Fish were randomly assigned to 12 per treatment with 3 replicates in a completely randomized design in concrete tanks as T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5. Sizes of the fishes range from 750 – 850g. The fish were fed with the experimental diet for 56 days at 5% body weight twice daily, morning and evening. For F1 brood stock, the highest total number of eggs per 1gm was in T5 with 262. Highest egg diameter was recorded in T4 and T5 with 0.82 mm, the highest total weight of eggs was in T5 with 131.54 then followed by T4, T3 and T2 recorded 104.66, 89.10 and 65.98 respectively while T1 had the least with a value of 65.84. Highest total number of eggs was recorded in T5 with 16,777 then 15,765, 15,677 and 14,788 in T4, T2 and T3 respectively while the lowest is recorded in T1 with 14,344. The total number of eggs in 1g in F2 broodstock was highest in T5 (682), followed by T4 (665), T3 (472), T2 (455) and the least in T1, the control (350).The total weight of eggs was highest in T5 (142.28), followed byT4 (130.82), T3 (125.1), T2 (71.03) and T1 had the least (22.85). The total number of eggs in F2 brood stock was highest in T5 (95,671) and followed by T4 (20,495), T3 (59,425), T2 (32,441) and the control was the least (7,980). From the results, egg quality parameters increased with increase in inclusion level and increased in F2 brood stock compared to F1 brood stock. Also, A. garckeana pulp meal diets has proved to influence better egg quality in C. gariepinus.
